day one - it does not come more exhausting than this

It did not start well - Michael the (avid) Traveller was almost in tears when he had a favourite pair of scissors confiscated from his toilet bag at Cape Town International. Not a great start but all was sorted and going well, even being trapped against the window (who likes window seats?) for the flight to Frankfort was not as bad as it could be. Poor Michael was wedged in the middle with a rather large lady next to him on the aisle (don't be rude, I said I had the window seat). We get to Frankfort with 35 minutes to get to gate B25. We had our boarding pass so it should have been simple. Alas German Security! This was pretty hectic as it was getting late and these guards were not very friendly. We were moved to another counter with 3 officials with rubber gloves who went through the entire backpack. An Aquafresh toothpaste was opened, shaving cream sniffed and eventually the culprit uncovered. Another pair of scissors! I could not believe this. Michael was now a tad sheepish (and so he should be - two pairs of scissors for one old roll of Elastoplast (for a blister he may get).  This time however it was wiped it across some magnetic strip and declared that he could keep it.

We now had to motor like Michael Jackson doing a moonwalk on those flat escalators. I just love them. We made it and this time Michael slipped into the window seat and I was trapped in the middle with a rather large and smelly cowboy next to me on the aisle. Not for too long though and soon
we were at Heathrow. Long queues and missing luggage, which was eventually found and a fun trip to Putney with 2 suitcases, two backpacks and a handbag. I was supposed to be travelling light! Is is another story.

We missed the walking tour we had booked but did our own marathon along the Southbank, Thames, St James Park and the palace. It is a stunning day and we made the most of it. London is very busy. There are school groups, prams, selfie sticks and hundreds of people eating ice creams.

We are sitting with our feet up in Putney enjoying Federer at his best. I have a cider and Michael a beer. Aimee will be home soon and we will head out for an early meal and an early night.

Beautiful geraniums in front of the palace

Cider - Had to give it a try. Refreshing, a bit toosweet but no replacement for wine.
